Башня КокуйKokuy Tower
Самая высокая башня кремля – дозорная «каланча» с гранёным восьмериком и белым куполом. С её верхних ярусов открывался вид на десятки вёрст вокруг Новгорода.The tallest tower of the kremlin – a watch «kalancha» with a faceted octagon and a white dome. From its upper tiers the view stretched for tens of versts around Novgorod.
В XV веке на месте существующей башни был раскат – невысокая, вровень со стенами башня, подобная тому, который располагался над водяными воротами на береговой стороне кремля. В XVII веке при строительстве комплекса Воеводского двора по проекту С. Л. Ефимова башня-раскат была основательно переделана: были надстроены три прямоугольных в плане этажа, а выше два восьмиугольных этажа.In the 15th century, a low "raskat" tower, flush with the walls, stood on this site, resembling the structure above the Kremlin's Water Gate on the riverbank. At the end of the 17th century, as part of the Voevoda's Court complex construction and under the project by S. L. Efimov, the tower was substantially altered. Three rectangular floors were erected upon it, and above them, two octagonal ones.
На нижних двух этажах с каменными сводами размещались винный погреб и казённая палата. На третьем этаже были сделаны выходы на крепостную стену, а самое верхнее помещение было предназначено для осмотра всего города. Выше был установлен деревянный шатёр, покрытый белым железом, а венчал позолоченный и местами посеребрённый прапор с гербом Новгородского государства, над прапором – корона, а над ней цветок.On the two lower floors, which had stone vaults, there were a wine cellar and a state treasury. The third floor provided access to the fortress wall, while the uppermost chamber served as an observation point for viewing the whole city. A wooden tent roof, sheathed in white iron, rose above this. It was topped by a gilded and partly silvered banner with the coat of arms of the Novgorod State, above which stood a crown and, at the very top, a finial.
Сейчас башня Кокуй – один из символов Новгорода. Кстати, на пятирублевой купюре изображен вид именно с башни Кокуй – в сторону Княжей башни.Today, the Kokui Tower is one of Novgorod's iconic symbols. Incidentally, the view from the Kokui Tower towards the Prince's Tower is the one depicted on the five-ruble banknote.
